There are many different things that a pastry blender can do. It really is an indispensable tool for those who spend a lot of time working in the kitchen

A dough blender is commonly used to quickly and easily blend ingredients such as butter, shortening, and other soft solids into dry goods. But as there are so many other things you can do with this blender, it really can be an indispensable tool, especially for those who don’t want to spend the extra time working in the kitchen.

Although most pastry blenders are similar in size and shape, their style, flexibility and the materials they are made from can vary enormously. And those who use a pastry blender on a regular basis will tell you these are the points that matter the most.

So why would you want a hand held pastry blender?

For just few dollars you could have a very handy tool that can make light work of pastry, dough, crumb type toppings, nut chopping, cracker crushing, potato or banana mashing (for banana bread) salsas, dips and guacamole.

Basically anything that needs squished together can usually be mixed with a dough blender.

  • Blades: 5 stainless steel.
  • Size; 5 x 5-1/4 x 2 inches
  • Weight; 6 oz
  • Handle; soft grip non slip handle
  • Cleaning; Dishwasher safe

With almost 100 five star ratings on Amazon OXO Good Grips is our first choice.

This dough blender comes with stainless steel blades and a durable non slip pressure absorbing, soft grip handle, making preparation of crumb style toppings and pastries effortless.

OXO have defiantly put some thought into the style and shape of this hand tool. The broad soft grip handle seems to fit perfectly into the palm and the stout blades don’t bend or flex in the way most do.

They get the job done quickly and easily without putting any extra presser on the wrists or hands.

Apart from the main job this tool was design for which would be to cut butter and margarine into various dry ingredients the OXO Good Grips blades are perfect for slicing thin butter patties, hard boiled eggs for salads and mashing and crushing various fruits and veg.

  • Blades; 4 Stainless steel.
  • Size; 2 x 8.5 x 4.8 inch.
  • Weight; 7 oz.
  • Handle; Soft Grip Black Plastic.
  • Cleaning; Dishwasher safe

The Cuisinart CTG-00-DB Dough Blender is also a very reliable and trusted blender with 4 sturdy blades and a soft grip plastic handle.

As with the OXO blender the Cuisinart won’t bend or flex when you use it to cut butter and other ingredients. In fact the only reason we gave this second place is that the OXO has an extra blade which makes the job slightly quicker.

The blades on the Cuisinart dough blender are second to none on sharpness which makes cutting though dough and other ingredients swift and clean. Strangely you would think this should be a given in dough blenders, but unfortunately it isn’t.

In fact more than 90 % of dough blenders, particularly the ones made with wires are flimsy and blunt, resulting in most ingredients being squashed and dragged rather than cut.

Summary

As you can see, there are many different things that a hand held pastry blender can do in your kitchen. These tools give you a lot of diversity wrapped up in a small package that doesn’t cost very much at all.

Whether you are making dough, pastry or cookies this handy tool will keep the ingredients you are using cold whilst blending to give perfect results every time.
